SEMMELWEIS
Concert premiere of this new opera by Ray Lustig
Semmelweis is a haunting and powerful new work performed by nine singers and an ensemble. The composition is inspired by the tragic, true story of visionary 19th-century Hungarian obstetrician Ignaz Semmelweis (1818-1865), who discovered the simple antiseptic solution to overcoming devastating childbed fever epidemics through hand washing, but was misunderstood and died alone in an asylum. The upcoming 200th anniversary of his birth presents a moment to reflect on his ever-timely story of truths too hard to bear.
